How to Explore a New City on Foot (Without Seeing What Everyone Else Sees)

Here is the uncomfortable thing about arriving somewhere new: you will probably end up exactly where everyone else ends up. Not because you lack imagination, but because three separate forces are quietly steering you onto the same few hundred metres of pavement as every other visitor that week.

Cities funnel people. Tourist activity is famously concentrated: study after study using mobile phone data, geotagged photos and card transactions finds that a small handful of areas absorb a large share of visitor activity while most of the city sees almost none. Tourists cluster far more tightly than residents do. And the newest force is the one most people are now using to plan the trip in the first place. A 2025 paper in Urban Science compared the heritage sites tourists actually visit in Barcelona, identified through Instagram geotags, against the sites ChatGPT recommends. The finding: the AI suggested a smaller and more spatially concentrated set than Instagram did, leaning on the best-known landmarks and skipping emerging or local spots.

Walking is genuinely the best way to see a city. But it is only better than the alternative if you actively work against that funnel. Here is how.

Your first hour: orient, don't sightsee

Resist the urge to go straight to the famous thing. Spend the first hour building a mental map instead, because everything you do afterwards gets easier once you have one.

The most useful framework here is sixty-five years old. In The Image of the City (1960), the urban planner Kevin Lynch interviewed residents of Boston, Jersey City and Los Angeles about how they pictured their own cities, and found that people build mental maps out of five elements: paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. Cities where those elements are distinctive feel legible. Cities where they blur feel confusing.

You can use that as a checklist on arrival:

  • Find your edge. A river, a coastline, a ring road, an old city wall. Edges are the boundaries you cannot accidentally cross, which makes them the most reliable orientation tool you have.
  • Find your node. The main square, the central station, the point where everything converges. This is your anchor for "I know how to get back."
  • Pick two landmarks you can see from a distance. A cathedral spire, a tower, a hill. Two is the magic number: one tells you where something is, two tell you where you are.

Ten minutes of this beats an hour of following a blue dot. There is also some suggestive evidence that leaning on turn-by-turn navigation comes at a cost: a 2020 study in Scientific Reports found that heavier lifetime GPS use correlated with weaker spatial memory, and that people who used GPS more between test sessions declined more over three years. Worth knowing, though the authors themselves caution the work is correlational and the longitudinal sample was small (13 people), so treat it as a nudge rather than a warning.

Take more turns

This is the single most useful tactic on this list, and it comes with an actual mechanism behind it.

Since the 1980s, researchers working in the space syntax tradition started by Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson at UCL have shown that street layout itself predicts where pedestrians go. Movement follows lines of sight, and the more connected a line of sight is to other lines of sight, the more foot traffic it carries. The counterintuitive part: people are more affected by the number of turns a route requires than by its actual length. Streets you can reach with fewer direction changes pull substantially more people. This relationship has been replicated across many cities.

Which means tourist flow is not random. It is structurally predictable, and it pools on the handful of streets that require the fewest turns from the main node. That is why the famous shopping street is heaving and the road two blocks behind it is empty.

So the tactic is embarrassingly simple: deliberately take more turns. Every turn you take off the main spine drops you into lower-footfall territory. You do not need to know a city to do this. You just need to commit to turning more often than feels efficient. Test it and you will notice the change within ten minutes: fewer suitcases, more laundry, prices in the windows aimed at people who live there.

Give the day a shape, not an itinerary

An itinerary is a list of places. A shape is a rhythm, and in late July a rhythm is what you actually need.

The WHO's guidance on heat is blunt: stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, particularly between 11:00 and 15:00, and avoid strenuous activity in that window. Drink water regularly, and go easy on alcohol and caffeine, which make dehydration worse.

That gives you the shape:

If this looks like how southern European cities already run, that is the point. The mid-afternoon shutdown is not laziness, it is climate adaptation that predates air conditioning by several centuries. Adopt it rather than fighting it. For the walking blocks themselves, you could do worse than a method invented in 1956. Guy Debord's "Theory of the Dérive" described the dérive as "a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances": you drop your usual reasons for moving through a city and let the terrain and what you encounter pull you along. Debord noted that the average dérive lasts a single day, "between two sleep periods", which makes it a surprisingly good fit for a traveller with one day in a new place. He also argued that the real distances between parts of a city have little to do with what a map measures, which anyone who has walked a steep old town already knows.

This is close to what we have called flâneuring, or walking without a destination. Same idea, older French.

Walk on your arrival day, and time it

If you crossed time zones, the walk is not just sightseeing. It is treatment.

The CDC puts the average rate of circadian adaptation at roughly 1.5 hours per day travelling west and 1 hour per day travelling east, which is why eastward trips hurt more. Staying awake and active during local daylight builds up sleep pressure for local night, which is the standard advice.

The more interesting finding is that the timing of exercise itself shifts your body clock, independently of light. A 2019 study in The Journal of Physiology put 101 adults through a lab protocol with an hour of moderate treadmill exercise at one of eight different clock times. Exercise at 07:00 and again between 13:00 and 16:00 advanced the body clock by roughly an hour. Exercise between 19:00 and 22:00 delayed it. Around 16:00 and 02:00 the effect was negligible.

Practically: if you flew east and need to get to sleep earlier, walk in the morning and the early afternoon, and go easy in the evening. If you flew west and need to stay up later, the evening walk is the useful one. The study used indoor treadmill exercise, so the effect is attributable to the movement rather than daylight. Walking outdoors plausibly stacks both, but that combination was not what was tested.

One honest caveat: bright light therapy for jet lag has weaker support than its popularity suggests, including a randomised trial that found no clinically relevant effect after a westward flight across five time zones. The walking advice stands on its own.

The practical stuff nobody gets right

Change your socks at lunch. The universal tip is "wear comfortable shoes", which you already knew and which is not where the evidence points. The most consistent finding in the blister literature is that moisture is the problem: a damp stratum corneum is more flexible, shear stress between skin layers goes up, and blisters follow. Sock composition, on the other hand, is not associated with blistering. So the fabric debate matters less than a dry spare pair in your bag. A systematic review found the evidence for socks, antiperspirants and barrier products generally thin, though paper tape did reduce blisters by around 40% in a randomised trial at ultramarathon events.

Know whether roaming actually covers you. If you are an EU resident travelling inside the EU, "Roam Like at Home" means your domestic allowance works across all 27 member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, with Ukraine and Moldova added from January 2026. Offline maps are a nice-to-have. If you are visiting from the US, UK, Canada or Australia, you have no such protection, and downloading the city before you land is the difference between wandering and being stranded.

Reconsider where the risk is. Pickpocketing concentrates where tourists concentrate: packed landmark squares, metro stations, the main shopping street. That follows directly from the concentration research above. The quiet residential street you feel uncertain about is usually not where anyone is working. The crowded plaza where you feel safe is.

Do the arithmetic on distance. Comfortable human walking speed is around 1.4 m/s, roughly 5 km/h. Four hours of actual walking is therefore about 20 km, and almost nobody walks four hours straight. Plan two blocks of two hours with real stops in between and you will cover more ground than the person who tried to do it all at once and quit at 14:00.

The map you have already walked

Every technique here points the same direction: the useful information is not where everyone goes, it is where you have not been yet. A map showing the top-rated sights is a map of the funnel. It tells you what a thousand other people did last week.

Orient in the first hour. Turn more often than makes sense. Walk early and late, hide in the middle. And let the dark part of the map, rather than the list of recommendations, decide which way you go next.
