The Rail-Trail Running Past Your Town

There is a trail being assembled across the United States on the beds of railroads that no longer carry anything. The Great American Rail-Trail runs from Washington, D.C. to Washington State, and the 2026 route assessment puts the preferred route at more than 3,700 miles: 2,086 miles already built, 1,674 miles still gaps.

That is 56% of a coast-to-coast trail that exists right now.

The through-hike is not the interesting part. Almost nobody will walk 3,700 miles. The interesting part is the reason a project like this is possible at all, and what it means for the eight-mile piece that probably runs somewhere near you.

Why a dead railroad makes such a good footpath

Two properties, both accidental.

Railroads cannot climb. Steel wheels on steel rail have almost no grip, so a freight line is engineered to stay near 1% grade and rarely exceeds 2%. To hold that, the railroad cut through hills, filled valleys, and curved gently around what it could not move. A century later, all that earthwork is a footpath with no steep sections anywhere in it. The flattest long walk in most American counties is a former railroad, and it is flat because of physics, not because anyone designed it for walking.

Railroads were continuous. A road network branches, dead-ends and hands you decisions. A rail line is one uninterrupted corridor for tens of miles. You can walk it for two hours without a single junction, which is either the best or the worst thing about it depending on what you came for.

The part that matters for exploring

Here is the thing nobody mentions, and it is the whole reason to care about the trail near you rather than the one across the country.

A railroad entered a town through its working edge. Not the main street, not the square, not the side with the nice houses. Rail went where the freight was: the mill, the grain elevator, the lumber yard, the loading dock, the back of the factory. Towns grew a polite face toward the road and turned their working face toward the tracks.

So a rail-trail walks you along the side of your town that faces away. You get the backs of buildings, the service alleys, the yards, the creek the road crosses on a bridge you never look over. If you have lived somewhere twenty years and driven every street, the rail corridor is still the one strip you have genuinely never seen, because it was never built to be seen.

That makes it the highest-yield walk available in a lot of American towns, and it is usually free, flat, and closer than people think.

What it does to a map

Walking reveals a corridor roughly 30 metres wide, so an out-and-back on a rail-trail clears a long clean ribbon:

That is a lot of new ground for one afternoon, and it is new in a way a neighbourhood loop never is, because the corridor does not overlap anything you already walk. Your existing map is a knot of streets around your house. The rail line is a straight line leaving town through territory none of those streets touch.

How to find the one near you

  • Look for the straight line. Open any map of your area and look for a suspiciously straight or gently curving line that ignores the street grid, often with a green strip along it. That is almost always a rail corridor, active or not.
  • Follow the street names. Railroad Street, Depot Street, Station Road and Mill Street all point at where the tracks were, even where the tracks are gone.
  • Check the town's own site before a trail app. Many short rail-trails are county or township projects that never made it into a national database.
  • Start at a trailhead, then leave it. The trail itself is one line. The point of walking it is the streets it connects to that you would never have driven to.

The honest version

Three things worth saying.

A rail-trail is a straight line, and straight lines get boring. The same property that makes the grade gentle makes the scenery repeat. An hour out and an hour back on a converted rail bed is genuinely monotonous for some people, and there is no shame in preferring a street grid where every zigzag is free.

The gaps are real. 1,674 of those 3,700 miles do not exist yet. Trail maps sometimes show planned segments alongside built ones, so check a segment is open before you drive to it.
