The advice for new parents walking with a pram is remarkably consistent and remarkably shallow. Start with ten or fifteen minutes. Use the brake. Keep the straps done up. Stand tall, elbows in, push with your whole body. Avoid gravel with a newborn.
All true, all worth doing, and all about the pram. None of it is about the one variable you control completely and that actually matters, which is where you push it.
Your baby is breathing different air than you are
This is the fact that should reorganise how you plan a walk, and it is almost entirely absent from the parenting articles.
Researchers at the Global Centre for Clean Air Research at the University of Surrey, led by Professor Prashant Kumar, reviewed more than 160 studies on in-pram exposure and published the synthesis in Environment International. The geometry is the whole story:
- A baby in a pram sits between 0.55 and 0.85 metres above the ground.
- Vehicle exhaust pipes typically sit within 1 metre of road level.
- Adults breathe roughly a metre higher, where the plume has already had more chance to disperse.
The consequence they report is that babies in prams can be exposed to up to 60% more pollution than the adult pushing them. Not because anything went wrong, but because the pram is parked in the layer where the exhaust is, and you are not.
It compounds twice. Infants inhale more airborne particles relative to their lung size and body weight than adults do, and they are doing it with developing organs and an immune system that is not finished. So the smaller person is getting the larger dose.
A later study from the same group, on school-run routes, adds the timing: in-pram exposure was around twice as high in the morning as in the afternoon, with ultrafine particles up to 47% higher during peak morning traffic, while afternoon coarse particles ran about 70% higher, driven by re-suspension from road and pavement rather than by exhaust. Junctions and bus stops came out as the worst spots on any route.
What actually reduces it
The useful part is that this is a geometry problem, so geometry fixes it. Ranked by how much they buy you:
1. Move laterally off the arterial. Concentrations fall off sharply with distance from the traffic lane. One street back from a main road is a different exposure environment, not a marginally better one. This is the single biggest lever available to you and it costs nothing but knowing that the parallel street exists.
2. Do not stand still at junctions and bus stops. These are the measured hotspots, and they are also where people wait. Idling engines at a red light put a pram directly behind a stationary exhaust pipe at exactly its height. Cross early, wait back from the kerb, and do not queue at the lights with the pram at the front.
3. Shift the time if the route is fixed. If the school run has to happen on that road, the morning peak is the worst window of the day for ultrafine particles.
4. Use the pram cover at hotspots. The Surrey group recommends this specifically as a barrier at the bad points on a route. It is a mitigation rather than a solution, and it does not replace the first three.
The unglamorous summary is that the best thing you can do for your baby's lungs on a walk is know a quieter parallel route, and use it by default rather than as a special occasion.
The other thing nobody warns you about
A smaller point, but it catches out almost every new parent who tracks their steps.
Pushing a pram wrecks your step count. The CDC's 2022 comparison analysis in Preventing Chronic Disease is blunt: wrist-worn monitors underestimate steps by 35% to 95% during walking where the arms are not swinging, and it names pushing a pram, a shopping trolley or a wheelchair as the cases. Your arms are on the handlebar. The watch sees almost nothing.
A phone is not much better if it has migrated into the pram basket or the changing bag, because a phone only counts what it is carried through. So the period of your life when you are walking the most is likely to be the period your tracker credits you least for, which is a genuinely demoralising piece of instrumentation. Practical fix: keep the phone on your body, and stop treating the step number as the measure of the walk during this period. It is measuring arm swing and carriage, not effort.
Where Fogbreaker fits, and what it will not do
We will not tell you which street has cleaner air. We have no air quality data, no pollution layer and no plans to imply one. Everything in the section above is something you apply yourself, with a map and local knowledge.
What we do is narrower and, for this specific situation, useful anyway. The map starts under fog and clears only where you have actually walked. New parents very quickly develop one loop, because the first walks are cautious and the loop that worked becomes the loop, and after a few months the map shows a single well-worn thread through an otherwise dark neighbourhood. Seeing that is usually the prompt to find the parallel street, which is the thing that was worth doing for the air anyway.
That is the honest version of the overlap: we do not route you away from traffic, we make it obvious that you have been doing the same 1.2 km for eleven weeks.
Two limits worth stating. The fog clears from GPS movement outdoors, so this does nothing for indoor walking. And the step undercount above applies to us as well: XP comes from steps, so pushing a pram will under-reward you on our leaderboard exactly as it does everywhere else. The map is the part that is unaffected, because it is drawn from where the phone went, not from arm swing.
