Every article about walking with children is a list of tricks. Bring a ball. Play I-spy. Promise a playground. Pretend the pavement is lava. Tell them there is a fast bit coming. The tricks are fine, some of them work, and none of the articles explain the thing you actually want explained, which is why a child who ran around a garden for two hours without stopping starts complaining eleven minutes into a walk.
It is not stamina and it is not attitude. It is arithmetic, and there are two numbers.
Their preferred pace is about half yours
In 2021 Vivian Rose and Christopher Arellano published Simple models highlight differences in the walking biomechanics of young children and adults in the Journal of Experimental Biology. They compared eight children aged five and six with eight adults.
The children's preferred walking speed averaged 0.62 metres per second. The adults' sat around 1.25 metres per second.
That is almost exactly double. In everyday units, the child is choosing about 2.2 km/h and you are choosing about 4.5 km/h. When you walk at your normal pace beside a five-year-old and think of it as walking together, they are working at twice their chosen speed for the entire distance. Nobody is doing that to be difficult, and nobody would describe it as a walk if it were happening to them.
Adults do notice a version of this and respond by slowing down a bit. A bit is not the correction. Half is the correction.
And every metre costs them more
The second number is worse, because it compounds with the first.
The same study found the children walked with a 36% greater net cost of transport than the adults. That is energy per kilogram per metre, so it is already adjusted for the obvious fact that children are smaller. Moving a given distance genuinely costs a young child around a third more than it costs you, pound for pound.
Rose and Arellano also measured why. The children's legs behaved as much softer springs, with a normalised stiffness of about 6.82 against 11.35 for the adults, roughly 40% more compliant. A stiffer leg returns more energy between steps. A softer one gives more of it back to the ground, and it has to be replaced.
Put the two together and a 3 km walk is, for a five-year-old, closer to what 4 km feels like to you, done at double their comfortable pace. The complaining at minute eleven is a reasonable report on their situation.
The honest caveat: this is eight children and eight adults, in a lab, at one narrow age. Treat it as the right shape rather than a precise conversion factor. Older children close the gap, and the closing is gradual rather than sudden.
Which changes what the fix is
If the problem were motivation, motivational tricks would be the fix, and you would not need a new one every ten minutes. The reason you burn through them is that they are being used to paper over a pace mismatch that keeps regenerating.
So do the boring structural things first, and keep the tricks for later.
Walk at their pace and treat it as the actual pace. Not "slower". Half. The test is whether they are talking. A child walking at their own speed narrates continuously. A child walking at yours goes quiet, then starts asking how far it is.
Plan on time, not distance. Distance is your unit and it is misleading here. Forty minutes out and back at their speed is a bit over 1.5 km, and that is a real walk, not a failed one.
Design for bursts, because that is how children move anyway. Left alone, children do not walk steadily, they alternate sprints and stops. Fighting that costs you both. A route with things to run to, from lamp post to lamp post, converts a steady endurance task into a series of short pursuits, which is the format they are actually built for. That, and not novelty, is why "race you to the corner" works so reliably.
Let the shortest legs set the route. The rule of thumb that circulates in hiking circles is roughly a mile per year of age. We could not find a study behind it and we would not lean on it, but as an upper bound for a good day it is not unreasonable, and most disappointing walks are planned at well over it.
Then use the tricks. Now they are doing what tricks are good at, which is covering the last stretch, rather than propping up an unworkable plan.
The one that outperforms the rest
Of all the interventions in the parenting articles, the one with the best return is a hunt, and several of those articles get close to this by naming geocaching without saying why it works.
It works because it moves the goal off the destination. A walk with a destination has one moment of success at the end, and everything before it is transit that the child correctly identifies as the boring part. A hunt has a success moment every few minutes, distributed along the route, and it makes the child the one choosing where to look, which removes the other half of the complaint, which is being marched.

Where Fogbreaker fits, honestly
We are not a children's app. There is no kids mode, no cartoon layer, no reward chart and nothing designed for a seven-year-old to hold. If you want an app for the child, this is not it.
It runs on your phone, and the reason it belongs in this article at all is that it solves the parent's half of the problem: it answers "where should we go today" without requiring you to think of anywhere. The map starts under fog and clears where you walk, so the unwalked streets near your home are visible as a picture rather than as something you have to remember. When the answer to where has been decided in advance, the walk starts faster, and with children the walk starting faster is most of the battle.
The overlap with the hunt idea is direct: dark streets are the board, and "we are going to fill in that bit today" is a goal a child can see the shape of. The version of this for adults, walking your whole city street by street, is a long project. At child pace it is a much longer one, which is fine, because the point was never to finish.
Two limits, plainly. The fog only clears from GPS movement outdoors, so nothing indoors counts. And it will not tell you which route is safe, shaded or free of main roads. That judgement stays yours, and with small children it is the judgement that matters most.
And if the passenger is still riding rather than walking, this is not yet your problem. That one is mostly about which street you push the pram down, and the answer is more consequential than it sounds.
Half your pace, twice the stops, and let them pick the corner. The rest of it is much easier than the articles make it sound.
