Walking in the Rain: The Case for Going Out

The smell of rain is not a mood. It is a mechanical event, it has been filmed, and it comes with a timing rule that tells you which rainy day is worth walking in.

The smell got its name in March 1964, in a paper in Nature by two CSIRO scientists in Australia, Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas. Until then it had been called "argillaceous odour", which is not a phrase anyone was ever going to use out loud. Thomas built the replacement out of Greek: petra, stone, and ichor, the fluid that ran in the veins of the gods. Petrichor. An essence drawn out of stone.

What Bear and Thomas could not do in 1964 was watch it happen. That took until January 2015, when Youngsoo Joung and Cullen Buie at MIT pointed high-speed cameras at falling raindrops and published the result in Nature Communications. Across roughly 600 experiments on 28 surfaces, 12 engineered and 16 real soils gathered from the MIT campus, the Charles River and Nahant Beach, they caught the mechanism. A raindrop landing on porous ground traps tiny air bubbles at the point of contact. The bubbles shoot up through the drop and burst out of the top of it, firing hundreds of aerosol droplets into the air in a few microseconds. Those aerosols carry whatever the ground was holding.

And here is the part that changes a walking decision. Light and moderate rain produce far more aerosols than heavy rain. A downpour hits too fast and too hard for the bubbles to form at all.

So the best-smelling walk of your year is not a dramatic one. It is light rain landing on ground that has been dry for a while, and it is a genuinely short-lived event. If you have ever stepped outside during the first soft rain after a dry spell and thought the street smelled extraordinary, you were not being sentimental. You were standing in an aerosol plume that a downpour would have suppressed.

Why you can smell it at all

The main compound in that plume is geosmin, made by soil bacteria, mostly Streptomyces. Human noses are absurdly good at detecting it. Published thresholds vary by method, but the commonly cited figures run from a few hundred parts per trillion down to about five. Either end of that range is an extremely small amount of a thing to notice while walking past a flowerbed.

Bear and Thomas found something else in a follow-up paper, and it is the detail that makes the whole thing click. The oils that build up in dry soil and get released by rain slow down seed germination. They are a chemical brake: while water is scarce, seeds stay put. When rain arrives, the brake is lifted and the smell is the by-product of it being lifted.

The smell of rain is, quite literally, the smell of a landscape being given permission to start growing. That is a better reason to go outside than anything in the average wellness listicle.

The thing that actually gets you wet is you

Now the practical half, starting with the misunderstanding that ruins more rainy walks than anything else.

Your rain jacket almost certainly does not leak. What happens is this. The outer face fabric carries a DWR coating, a durable water repellent finish, which is what makes rain bead up and roll off. That coating wears away through abrasion, dirt, sunscreen, body oils, being stuffed into a bag, and washing. Once it is gone, rain stops beading and the face fabric soaks through. This is called wetting out.

A saturated face fabric cannot pass water vapour. So the breathable membrane underneath, which is still perfectly waterproof, has nowhere to vent your sweat to. The vapour condenses on the inside of the jacket and you arrive home damp, convinced the jacket failed. No liquid water ever crossed the membrane. You got wet from the inside.

Two consequences nobody puts in a rain-walking article:

  • A rain jacket has a service interval, and it is measured in outings rather than years. Gear testers generally report needing to reproof after a couple of dozen uses, and the short-chain DWR chemistry that replaced the older fluorocarbon formulations wears faster than what people remember from a decade ago. If your jacket has "started leaking", it has almost certainly just got dirty.
  • Washing a rain jacket makes it work better, not worse. Dirt and oil are the things killing the DWR. Wash it with a technical cleaner rather than normal detergent, then reproof it, and in many cases a warm tumble dry reactivates what is left of the coating.

The other half of staying dry is what you put underneath. Cotton next to the skin holds water, loses effectively all its insulating value when wet, and then keeps pulling heat out of you for as long as you wear it. Wool or synthetic instead. This matters more than the jacket does, for reasons in the next section.

The dangerous temperature is not the cold one

This is the mirror image of a fact worth knowing about winter. Frostbite needs the actual air temperature below freezing, so above zero your skin genuinely cannot freeze no matter how vicious the wind feels.

Hypothermia has no such floor.

Being wet and windblown at 5°C to 10°C is a more reliable way to get dangerously cold than a dry, still day at well below freezing. Water pulls heat out of you far faster than air does, wind then strips the warmed layer off your wet clothing continuously, and none of it feels dramatic enough to trigger the caution that a snowstorm would. Health guidance is consistent on this: body temperature can fall at 10°C, and it can fall in warmer conditions than that if you are wet and it is windy.

So the genuinely risky rainy walk is not the January one where you dressed for January. It is the mild autumn afternoon at 8°C where it started raining forty minutes in, you were wearing a cotton hoodie, and you still had an hour to walk home. Nobody thinks of 8°C as a hypothermia temperature. That is exactly the problem.

The fix is unglamorous: nothing cotton against your skin, a shell you can actually close at the neck and wrists, and a willingness to turn round early. Early hypothermia looks like shivering you cannot control, clumsy hands, stumbling, slurred speech, and a strange lack of concern about any of it. That last symptom is the dangerous one, because it arrives before anyone notices.

What rain does and does not do for you

Rainy-walk articles make three claims that deserve sorting out.

"Rain cleans the air." Partly true, and better than partly true for some things. Rain physically captures particles as it falls, a process called washout, and it works best on the coarse stuff: dust, pollen, road grit. That is why the air after rain genuinely is easier to breathe if you have hay fever. For fine particles, PM2.5, it is messier. A two-city study in China measured PM2.5 falling 27% during rain and 42% afterwards, with the effect lasting days, but the result depended heavily on how much rain fell and how dirty the air was to begin with, and light drizzle onto already-clean air can nudge fine-particle readings the wrong way. Call it a real effect with an asterisk rather than a headline number.

"Walking in the rain burns more calories." Barely, and the same way it barely does in heat or cold. Your body spends energy staying warm, so if you get genuinely cold you burn a bit more. But getting genuinely cold is the thing you are trying to avoid, and if you are dressed properly the effect mostly vanishes. Distance and pace move the number. Weather does not, which you can check for yourself in the walking calorie calculator.

"Rainwater is good for your skin and hair because it is alkaline." It is not alkaline. Rain dissolves carbon dioxide on the way down and arrives mildly acidic, around pH 5.6 before any pollution is involved. This one is simply made up.

Traction and being seen

Cold gets the attention in winter and ice causes the injuries. Rain has the same split, and the hazards are just as predictable.

The slippery surfaces are the smooth, non-porous ones that everyone walks over without thinking: painted road markings and crossings, metal drain covers, manhole covers, tram and rail tracks, polished stone or tiled shop entrances, and wooden decking or bridges. Wet leaves in autumn are worse than they look, because a layer of them behaves like a bearing surface over whatever is underneath. On all of these, do the same thing that works on ice: shorter steps, feet slightly wider, weight over the front foot, hands out of pockets.

Then there is traffic, where rain compounds two problems at once. Braking distances on a wet road are at least double the dry equivalent, which is explicit in the UK Highway Code, and rain plus spray plus a fogged windscreen cuts how far ahead a driver can pick you out. A dark rainy afternoon is meaningfully worse than either a dark dry evening or a bright wet one, and it is very common in October and November.

The good news is that the single most effective visibility fix is cheap and most people get it wrong. Reflective material on your ankles and wrists is noticed at far greater distances than the same material on your chest, because moving limbs read as a human being to a driver's brain before conscious recognition kicks in. Rain is where the habit actually breaks

Heat kills walking habits in July by making the walk unpleasant. Rain kills them year-round by making the walk optional, which is worse, because the decision is made indoors in about four seconds while looking out of a window.

Three things that hold up:

  • Decide before you look outside. A walk that is conditional on the forecast is a walk you will skip roughly as often as it rains. Owning a shell that works removes the decision, which is most of what it is for.
  • Let the walk be short. Twenty minutes in drizzle keeps the chain alive. The alternative is not a better walk later, it is no walk.
  • Make the short wet walk still count for something. This is where a step target works against you, because 3,000 steps against a 10,000 goal reads as failure, and a failure on a rainy Tuesday is exactly how a streak ends.

That last point is the honest reason a fog-of-war map suits bad weather unusually well. Your map starts dark and only walking clears it, so twenty wet minutes down two streets you have never taken is two streets, permanently, regardless of what the step count says. The question stops being "did I do enough today" and becomes "which bit is next", and that is a much easier question to answer while pulling on a wet coat.

There is also a genuine, underrated argument for the rain specifically: the city empties. The busy riverside path, the market square, the popular park loop, the narrow shopping street you avoid on a Saturday, all of them are yours in the rain. If you have been putting off the routes that are usually too crowded to enjoy, a wet Sunday morning is the best time you will get all year. Fewer people, better light, and everything reflecting.

Your rainy-day walking checklist

  1. Light rain after a dry spell is the walk worth prioritising, for the smell alone.
  2. No cotton next to your skin. Wool or synthetic.
  3. Reproof the jacket before you blame it. Wash with a technical cleaner, then reproof.
  4. Reflective material on ankles and wrists, not just the chest panel.
  5. Assume wet paint, metal and leaves are slippery. Shorter steps, hands out of pockets.
  6. Watch the mild wet days, 5°C to 10°C with wind, more carefully than the cold dry ones.
  7. A brimmed cap under the hood keeps rain off your glasses and out of your eyes, and does more for comfort than anything else on this list.
  8. Turn round early rather than cancelling entirely.

The bottom line

Rain has a worse reputation than it deserves, mostly because the two things that go wrong with it are both fixable and neither is the rain.

Your jacket wets out and you blame the weather. You dress for a mild day, get soaked at 8°C, and learn nothing except that walking in the rain is miserable. Fix those two and what is left is quiet streets, cleaner air, and the one smell that a laboratory needed high-speed cameras to explain.
